Here is a list of 10 great ways to help you tan darker, faster and for longer:
1. Moisturize your skin
Using a good moisturizer both before and after your tanning session prevents your skin from getting too dry. This helps to prolong your tan and keep you looking younger.
2. Shower before tanning
Without exfoliating, you should gently wash your skin in the shower. This gives the UV light the best chance at penetrating the top layers of your skin. Kick-starting that melatonin production.
3. Use a tanning accelerator
These lotions help you tan faster, moisturise and many help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. By supplying your skin with much needed vitamins, minerals, amino acids and moisture, these lotions can help you tan up to 67% better than using no lotion at all.
4. Have longer sessions
Most sunbeds take at least 3 minutes to reach their maximum output. Meaning that a single 6 minute session is much more powerful than two separate 3 minute sessions.
5. Don’t burn!
Over-using a sunbed can cause you to burn. Besides being uncomfortable and often painful, this can result in very dry skin often resulting in peeling. If you burn, you should wait at least 48 hours after the redness has gone before going back on any sunbed.
6. Change your diet
Believe it or not, what you eat can significantly affect how well you will tan.
A diet high in Vitamin A raise your body’s production of melatonin. The best source of vitamin A is carrots.
Selenium and Vitamin E protect the skin from wrinkles: they are contained in eggs, corn, tomatoes, avocado and white cheeses. Fish, almonds and hazelnuts contain omega 3, fundamental to prevent skin aging.
Beta carotene is to be found mainly in fruits and vegetables that are orange and red colored. Consume vegetables raw or steamed and season them preferably with extra-virgin olive oil, as it helps in absorbing the beta-carotene.
7. Tanning Supplements
Your tanning salon may sell additional products known as tanning supplements. These can come in many form including drinks, tablet and sweets. Most tanning supplements contain the vitamins and minerals to assist your body into producing melatonin. It is even possible to tan using tanning supplements without using a sunbed.
8. Have the right skin
Type 1 skin does not tan, and in fact, it is not recommended for people with type 1 skin to use the sunbeds. People with fair or red hair and/or a large number of freckles tend to have type 1 skin. Having a natural olive or brown tone to your skin gives you a huge head start and means that you are more likely to tan faster and darker!
9. Be a regular
It probably obvious, if you aren’t tanning very often, then you aren’t going to tan as quickly. It’s important to leave 24-48 hours between tanning sessions, and it’s common for regular tanners to use sunbeds 3-4 times per week.
10. Not all sunbeds are equal
Sunbed tubes range in price from £5 to £50! Varying in power, UV output, frequency and wavelength. It is possible for two different 200W beds can give a totally different tanning experience. Ask your tanning salon what tubes they are using and what their UV output is.
